A recent study commissioned by the Cambodia Microfinance Association (CMA) and conducted by M-CRIL made headlines across Cambodian media. The research, titled “An impact assessment of mincrofinance in Cambdoia”, revealed the microfinance sector's powerful role in driving Cambodia's economic engine and propelling the nation towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The report, launched on January 19, 2024, garnered significant media coverage across Cambodia. Outlets ranging from prominent English newspapers like The Phnom Penh Post and Khmer Times to English-language online publications like Kiri Post and US-backed VOA all featured the study.
The report not only raises awareness about the transformative power of microfinance but also validates the CMA's dedicated efforts to strengthen the industry. In addition, this media coverage will attract further support for microfinance initiatives in Cambodia, ultimately benefiting even more individuals, communities and the sector.
The report revealed that two-thirds of the sample reported an improvement in their lives, with 31% experiencing substantial economic benefits and life improvements, while another 36% reported some improvement over the past 5 years. This is a tribute to the economic growth of Cambodia supported, for many low income households, by the availability of microfinance.
The impact assessment study, conducted meticulously with 3200+ microfinance clients from
10 provinces and 450+ villages, highlights the microfinance sector's multifaceted impact on the lives of Cambodians.
