Challenges and Trends in Cambodia's Microfinance Sector |
Cambodia's microfinance landscape has undergone a fascinating transformation over the last decade, revealing a sector navigating both growth and emerging challenges. While the number of borrowers has slightly decreased, the total amount of loans outstanding continues to rise, hinting at evolving financial needs and strategic shifts. |
The increase in the Portfolio at Risk 30+ (PAR 30+) ratio in Cambodia's microfinance sector, which rose to 8.2% in December 2024 from 5.7% the previous year, is largely attributed to the ongoing economic downturn and the prolonged war between Russia and Ukraine. These factors have created significant financial strain for borrowers, resulting in increased repayment difficulties as job losses and inflationary pressures take their toll. |
