Empowering Health and Hope: WCAD Program Delivers Clean Water and Sanitation to Nearly 40,000 Cambodians in H1 2026

Empowering Health and Hope: WCAD Program Delivers Clean Water and Sanitation to Nearly 40,000 Cambodians in H1 2026

Access to safe water and adequate sanitation isn't just a necessity—it is the foundation of community health, dignity, and economic development.

Through the WaterCredit Adoption (WCAD) Program, the Cambodia Microfinance Association (CMA), in close partnership with Water.org, continues to scale sustainable Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) financing across the Kingdom.

During the first half of 2026 alone, the program mobilized $5.88 million USD in capital, disbursing 9,081 WASH loans that directly improved the living conditions and well-being of 39,399 Cambodian people.

Key Capital & Impact Metrics (H1 2026)

  • $5.88 Million USD mobilized for WASH micro-loans.
  • 9,081 WASH Loans issued to families for household water connections and sanitation facilities.
  • 39,399 Cambodian Lives directly impacted through improved access to clean water and sanitation.

Empowering Frontline Personnel & Sector Capacity

Behind every loan is a dedicated credit officer helping families understand the transformative benefits of WASH investments. To support financial institution personnel in driving loan growth, CMA conducted a specialized training session titled "Boosting WASH Loan Selling Skills", equipping 91 credit staff and branch managers with practical engagement and communication techniques.

In tandem, staff across the microfinance sector demonstrated remarkable dedication to professional growth:

  • 98% Certification Rate: 125 out of 127 enrolled professionals successfully completed Water.org’s online Learning Management System (LMS) courses on Water and Sanitation Financing and WASH Business.

This high completion rate reflects strong sector engagement and high knowledge retention among partner financial institutions.

Expanding Network Reach and Onboarding New Partners

The WCAD program ecosystem continues to expand, bringing more financial service providers into green and social impact lending.

  • 23 Active Partner Financial Institutions (PFIs) are now driving WASH microfinance across Cambodia.
  • 2 New Partners were onboarded during this reporting period, successfully integrating WASH financial products into their core banking systems to streamline loan disbursements.
  • Tailored Marketing Support: To assist new partners with their product rollout, CMA designed and printed customized Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials for Samnang Prathebathkar, Dithemar, and Vireaksak RCI.

High-Level Advocacy & Sustainable Ecosystem Building

To ensure WASH financing remains sustainable over the long term, CMA actively engages policy makers, institutional leaders, and government partners:

  • Executive Leadership Buy-In: CMA showcased the WCAD program’s milestones at its Annual General Assembly, CEO Club, and Operations Club meetings, securing top-level commitment across the microfinance sector.
  • Exploring Dedicated Climate Funds: CMA held high-level discussions with the Agricultural and Rural Development Bank (ARDB) to explore establishing a dedicated climate fund facility aimed at unlocking long-term, affordable capital for partner financial institutions.
  • Supporting Infrastructure Operators: Dialogue continued with the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTI) to address structural financing challenges faced by Private Water Operators (PWOs).

Through these multi-stakeholder efforts, CMA and Water.org remain committed to expanding access to clean water, promoting dignity, and fostering climate-resilient communities across Cambodia.
